recon mission
Gather enemy information
A recon mission is a military operation to gather information about enemy positions, terrain, or movements without engaging in combat.
Short for reconnaissance mission.
The term has spread to casual use for any preliminary scouting: I did a recon mission to check out the restaurant before our date.
