recension

Critical text editing

A recension is a critical revision of a text, especially an ancient or classical work, based on careful examination of different manuscripts or sources.

Scholars produce recensions to establish the most accurate version of a text that has been copied and recopied over centuries: the standard recension of Homer's Iliad.

The term also refers to the revised text itself.
