critical edition

Annotated definitive version

A critical edition is a scholarly version of a text that reconstructs what the author most likely wrote, drawing on multiple manuscripts, drafts, or published versions.

Editors compare variants, correct errors introduced by copyists or printers, and document their decisions in detailed notes.

The term applies especially to ancient and medieval works where no original manuscript survives: the critical edition of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

A critical edition differs from a facsimile or diplomatic edition, which reproduce a single source exactly as it appears.
