apparatus criticus
Textual variant footnotes
Apparatus criticus is the scholarly notation accompanying an edited text, documenting variant readings from different manuscripts and editorial decisions.
Found in critical editions of ancient or medieval works, it allows readers to see where sources disagree and evaluate the editor's choices: The apparatus criticus lists three alternative readings for this passage.
Also called critical apparatus.
