random access memory

Temporary computer storage

Random access memory is a type of computer memory that can be read from and written to in any order—you can access any byte without going through the ones before it.

Abbreviated RAM, it serves as a computer's working memory, holding data and programs currently in use.

Unlike storage drives, RAM is volatile: its contents disappear when power is cut.

My laptop has 16 gigabytes of RAM.
