battery backup

Outage protection device

A battery backup is a device that provides temporary electrical power when the main power source fails.

Most commonly, it refers to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) that keeps computers and other electronics running during outages, allowing time to save work and shut down safely: The battery backup kicked in when the power went out.

The term also applies to backup batteries in phones, alarm systems, and other devices that need to maintain function during power loss.
