A raincheck is a promise to honor an offer at a later time.
The term comes from baseball, where spectators received tickets for a future game if rain cancelled play.
Now it applies broadly: stores issue rainchecks when sale items sell out, and I'll take a raincheck politely declines an invitation while leaving the door open for next time.
