dew worm

Large fishing bait

A dew worm is a large earthworm, especially the common nightcrawler used as fishing bait.

The name comes from the worms' habit of emerging from the soil on dewy nights, when they can be gathered from lawns and gardens: We went out with flashlights to collect dew worms.

The term is used primarily in Canada and parts of the northern United States.
