radiobeacon

Aerial navigation signal

A radiobeacon is a fixed radio transmitter that broadcasts a signal to help ships and aircraft determine their position or navigate toward a destination.

Beacons may transmit continuously or at intervals, often with distinctive identifiers.

The term appears in aviation and maritime contexts: The pilot tuned to the radiobeacon's frequency.

Also written as two words: radio beacon.
