queers

Throws off course

Queers as a noun was once purely a slur for gay people but has been substantially reclaimed as an umbrella identity term: Queers have always been part of this neighborhood.

Some still find the word painful.

As a verb, queers means ruins or spoils, from the original sense of making something strange or wrong: That mistake queers the whole deal.
