pushdown
Press toward ground
Pushdown functions as both adjective and noun in technical contexts.
A pushdown storage structure or pushdown stack operates on a last-in-first-out principle—items are added to the top and removed from the top, like a spring-loaded stack of cafeteria trays.
In computing and formal language theory, a pushdown automaton is a theoretical machine that uses such a stack to recognize certain patterns.
More generally, pushdown describes any mechanism where new items push existing ones down: The pushdown list showed the most recent entries at the top.
