pushbuttons

Press-to-activate mechanisms

Pushbuttons are small buttons designed to be pressed with a finger to activate a mechanism or switch—on elevators, telephones, appliances, and countless electronic devices.

The term often modifies other nouns: pushbutton phone, pushbutton warfare.

The latter suggests warfare conducted remotely and impersonally, by pressing buttons rather than engaging directly.
