spudder
Cable tool rig
A spudder is a type of drilling rig used to start oil or water wells, punching through surface soil and rock before deeper drilling equipment takes over.
The term comes from the percussive "spudding" motion—repeatedly lifting and dropping a heavy bit.
Spudders are simpler and more portable than rotary rigs: They brought in a spudder to punch the first hundred feet.
