pre-date

Exist earlier than

Pre-date means to exist or occur before something else in time: The ruins pre-date the Roman Empire.

It can also mean to assign an earlier date to something than when it actually occurred—the opposite of post-date: He pre-dated the check by a week.

Also spelled predate. (The word predate without a hyphen more commonly means to hunt and kill for food.)
