potholing

Underground passage navigation

Potholing is the British term for exploring natural underground caves as a recreational activity, called spelunking in American English.

The word comes from pothole in its older sense of a deep vertical shaft in limestone terrain.

Potholers navigate tight passages, underground rivers, and vertical drops: We went potholing in the Yorkshire Dales.
