chimneying

Back-and-feet ascending

Chimneying is a rock climbing technique where climbers ascend a narrow vertical gap by bracing their back against one wall and feet against the opposite wall, then inching upward through alternating pressure: She chimneyed up the crevice between the two boulders.

The technique works in gaps too wide for standard handholds but narrow enough to span with the body.
