portal vein
Liver's blood highway
The portal vein is a large blood vessel that carries nutrient-rich blood from the digestive organs to the liver for processing.
Unlike most veins, which return blood to the heart, the portal vein connects two capillary networks—one in the intestines, another in the liver.
This arrangement allows the liver to metabolize absorbed nutrients before they enter general circulation.
