sermonize

Lecture on ethics

To sermonize is to deliver a sermon or, more commonly, to lecture others in a moralistic or preachy way.

The word almost always carries a negative connotation—nobody wants to be sermonized at: He sermonized about the dangers of social media while checking his phone.

The related noun sermonizing describes this kind of tiresome moralizing.
