polyvinyl

Polymer in pipes

Polyvinyl is a prefix appearing in the names of various synthetic polymers derived from vinyl compounds, most commonly polyvinyl chloride (PVC), used in pipes, flooring, and countless plastic products.

Other polyvinyl compounds include polyvinyl acetate (the basis of white glue) and polyvinyl alcohol (used in adhesives and coatings).

The term sometimes appears on its own as shorthand for any of these materials: The siding is polyvinyl, not wood.
