March of Dimes
Birth defects nonprofit
March of Dimes is an American nonprofit organization originally founded in 1938 to combat polio, now focused on preventing birth defects and infant mortality.
The name came from a fundraising campaign encouraging people to send dimes to the White House, a play on the newsreel series "The March of Time." After the polio vaccine succeeded, the organization pivoted to maternal and infant health issues.
The March of Dimes funded research that led to the first successful polio vaccine.
