polar nights
Sunless winter periods
Polar nights are the winter periods within the Arctic and Antarctic circles when the sun doesn't rise above the horizon, leaving the region in continuous darkness or twilight for weeks or months.
The phenomenon occurs because Earth's axial tilt keeps polar regions angled away from the sun during winter: During polar night, some Norwegian towns don't see sunlight for two months.
