A platform game is a video game genre where players control a character who runs and jumps between suspended platforms, avoids obstacles, and defeats enemies.
The genre takes its name from the platforms themselves—the ledges, floors, and floating surfaces that make up the game's terrain.
Classic examples include Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog.
The term is often shortened to platformer.
