plafond
Decorated overhead surface
A plafond is an ornately decorated ceiling, or the decorative treatment applied to it—painted scenes, gilded moldings, elaborate plasterwork.
The term appears mainly in architectural and art-historical contexts: The palazzo's plafond depicted gods and cherubs in swirling clouds.
In some card games, plafond refers to a scoring ceiling or limit.
