pierogis

Polish filled pockets

Pierogis are Eastern European dumplings—pockets of unleavened dough filled with potatoes, cheese, sauerkraut, meat, or fruit, then boiled and often pan-fried in butter.

Associated especially with Polish cuisine, they appear at church suppers and ethnic festivals across the American Midwest and Northeast: We stopped for pierogis at the Polish diner.

The standard Polish plural is pierogi, but pierogis is common in American English.
