picador

Bullfight's horseback lancer

A picador is a mounted bullfighter who uses a lance to weaken the bull during the early stages of a bullfight.

The picador rides an armored horse and jabs the bull's neck muscles, lowering its head and reducing its strength before the matador takes over for the final act.

The term comes from Spanish, where it derives from the verb meaning to prick or pierce.
