picadors
Bullfight's mounted lancers
Picadors are the mounted bullfighters who use lances to weaken the bull in the early stages of a bullfight.
They ride armored horses and jab the bull's neck muscles, lowering its head for later stages of the fight.
The term comes from Spanish, where it derives from the verb meaning to prick or pierce: The picadors entered the ring as the crowd jeered.
