physical culture

Exercise and health

Physical culture is the systematic development of the body through exercise, diet, and disciplined living.

The term was popular from the late 19th through mid-20th century, when strongmen, health reformers, and early bodybuilders promoted it as a path to vitality and moral improvement.

Today it sounds old-fashioned; modern equivalents include fitness, bodybuilding, or wellness: He was a devotee of physical culture, rising at dawn for calisthenics.
