food stamps

Government nutrition aid

Food stamps are government-issued vouchers that low-income individuals and families can exchange for groceries.

The U.S. program, now officially called SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), replaced paper stamps with electronic benefit cards in the early 2000s, though the old name persists: She's on food stamps, They don't take food stamps here.
