peritoneal cavity
Gut-surrounding hollow
The peritoneal cavity is the space within the abdomen between the inner abdominal wall and the organs, lined by a thin membrane called the peritoneum.
In healthy conditions, this cavity contains only a small amount of lubricating fluid that allows organs to move smoothly against each other.
Abnormal fluid accumulation here is called ascites.
