perfect squares

Numbers with integer roots

Perfect squares are numbers that result from multiplying an integer by itself: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, and so on.

The term extends to algebraic expressions: x² + 2x + 1 is a perfect square because it factors to (x + 1)².

In casual use, perfect square sometimes describes something that fits neatly into expected categories.
