radical sign
Square root indicator
The radical sign is the mathematical symbol (√) used to indicate a root, most commonly a square root.
The number under the symbol is the radicand: √16 = 4.
For roots other than square roots, a small number called the index appears in the crook of the symbol: ∛8 = 2 indicates a cube root.
