penetrance
Trait expression rate
Penetrance is a genetics term describing the proportion of individuals with a particular gene variant who actually show the associated trait or condition.
A gene with high penetrance almost always produces its effect; one with low penetrance often doesn't.
The mutation has 80% penetrance, meaning one in five carriers won't develop the disease.
The concept explains why genetic conditions can skip generations or affect family members differently.
