patchboard

Manual routing grid

A patchboard is a panel with an array of sockets that can be connected with short cables called patch cords, allowing signals to be routed between different pieces of equipment.

Common in audio studios, telephone exchanges, and early computing, patchboards let operators reconfigure connections without rewiring: The engineer rerouted the signal through the patchboard.

Also called a patch panel.
