IKEA
Flat-pack empire
IKEA is a Swedish multinational company selling ready-to-assemble furniture, home accessories, and housewares.
The name has become shorthand for a particular aesthetic—affordable, minimalist Scandinavian design—and for the experience of navigating warehouse-sized stores, deciphering assembly instructions, and wielding an Allen wrench: We spent Saturday afternoon putting together IKEA furniture.
The company's product names, drawn from Swedish words, have become cultural touchstones: Everyone's first apartment has a BILLY bookcase.
