handicapped

Given starting disadvantage

Handicapped describes a person with a physical or mental disability, or conditions designed to accommodate such people: handicapped parking, handicapped-accessible restrooms.

The term was once standard but has largely given way to "disabled" or "person with a disability," which many consider more respectful.

In sports, a handicap is a scoring adjustment to equalize competition between players of different abilities.

To be handicapped by something is to be at a disadvantage: We were handicapped by the lack of reliable data.
