palimpsests

Scraped and reused

Palimpsests are manuscripts where the original writing has been scraped or washed away so the surface could be reused for new text.

With age, the erased writing often becomes faintly visible again beneath the newer layers.

The word extends to anything bearing visible traces of its earlier forms: The city is a palimpsest of architectural styles.

A palimpsest suggests accumulated history incompletely erased.
