palapas

Thatched beach huts

Palapas are open-sided shelters with thatched roofs made from dried palm leaves, common on beaches and in tropical resorts.

The word comes from Mexican Spanish.

A palapa provides shade while allowing breezes to pass through: We had drinks at the palapa bar by the pool.

The term sometimes extends to any thatched beach umbrella or shade structure.
