palapa

Thatched beach hut

A palapa is an open-sided shelter with a thatched roof made from dried palm leaves, common in Mexico and Central America.

Palapas provide shade on beaches and around pools, often sheltering bars or seating areas: We grabbed drinks at the palapa by the water.

The word comes from Mexican Spanish.
