overselling

Hyping too much

Overselling is promoting something more aggressively or extravagantly than the facts warrant.

A salesperson might oversell a product's capabilities; a job candidate might oversell their qualifications.

The term also applies to literally selling more of something than exists or can be delivered—airlines routinely oversell flights, booking more passengers than seats.

The pitch was good but he was clearly overselling it.

Whether literal or figurative, overselling risks disappointment or backlash when reality fails to match the hype.
