overbuilding

Too much development

Overbuilding is constructing more than demand warrants—too many houses, offices, or retail spaces for the market to absorb.

The term appears in real estate and urban planning: Overbuilding in the 1980s led to a glut of empty strip malls.

It can also mean building something too large or elaborate for its purpose: The bridge was criticized as overbuilding for such light traffic.
