greenfield

Built from nothing

Greenfield describes a site or project starting from scratch, without existing infrastructure or constraints.

The term comes from construction: a literal green field has no buildings to work around.

In business and technology, a greenfield project begins fresh rather than modifying what exists: We're building greenfield rather than retrofitting the legacy system.

The opposite is brownfield, a site with prior development.
