outside line
External phone connection
An outside line is a telephone connection to the external network, as opposed to internal extensions within an office or building.
You typically dial a digit (often 9) to get one: Dial 9 for an outside line.
The term persists from older phone systems where reaching external numbers required explicit access to a trunk line.
