touch tone
Button-based phone system
Touch tone describes the system of telephone dialing that uses distinct audio tones for each button pressed, replacing the older rotary dial.
Each key generates a specific frequency combination that the phone network recognizes.
The term often appears as an adjective: a touch tone phone, touch tone service.
