road agent

Holdup man, historically

A road agent is a bandit who robs travelers, especially stagecoaches—the American West's version of a highwayman.

The term belongs to the frontier era of the mid-to-late 1800s: The road agents held up the Wells Fargo stage and made off with the strongbox.

Now used only in historical contexts or westerns.
