organoid
Tiny cultured organ
An organoid is a miniature, simplified version of an organ grown in a laboratory from stem cells.
These three-dimensional cell clusters develop some of the structure and function of real organs—brain organoids form neural tissue, gut organoids develop intestinal folds.
Researchers use them to study disease, test drugs, and explore development without experimenting on whole organisms: The team grew liver organoids to study how the virus attacks human tissue.
