ordinations

Making ministers official

Ordinations are ceremonies in which people are formally admitted to religious ministry or holy orders.

A priest, minister, rabbi, or other clergy member receives ordination as the ritual conferring authority to perform religious duties.

The term can also refer more broadly to the act of ordering or arranging things in sequence, though the religious sense dominates: Three ordinations were scheduled for the cathedral this spring.
