ordination of women
Consecrating female ministers
The ordination of women is the practice of conferring clergy status on women, allowing them to serve as priests, ministers, rabbis, or other religious leaders.
Many Christian denominations, Reform and Conservative Judaism, and some other faiths now ordain women, while Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Orthodox Judaism, and most of Islam maintain male-only clergy.
The issue remains contentious: The ordination of women split the denomination.
