Zen Buddhism
Koans and zazen
Zen Buddhism is a school of Mahayana Buddhism emphasizing meditation and direct insight over scriptural study or ritual.
Practitioners seek enlightenment through disciplined sitting meditation (zazen) and contemplation of paradoxical questions (koans) designed to bypass rational thought.
The tradition originated in China and later flourished in Japan.
In casual use, Zen suggests calm acceptance or intuitive understanding: She has a very Zen approach to problems.
