one-drop

Any Black ancestry

One-drop refers to the racist principle, codified in some U.S. laws during the Jim Crow era, that any person with even one drop of Black ancestry should be classified as Black.

The rule was used to enforce segregation and restrict rights based on racial classification, regardless of appearance or self-identification.

It persists as a concept in discussions of race, identity, and the arbitrary nature of racial categories in America.

The one-drop rule meant that people who appeared white were legally classified as Black.
