old city
Venerable urban center
An old city is simply a city that has existed for a long time, or the historic core of a larger urban area: The old city has narrow streets and ancient walls.
Many places have neighborhoods called "the old city" to distinguish historic centers from modern development. (Capitalized Old City typically refers to specific historic districts, especially Jerusalem's.)
